Annette Funicello was 13 years aged when she was noticed by the studio's head Walt Disney dancing in an amateur production called Swan Lake in Fullerton California. In spite of the opposition from their Mickey Mouse Club co-stars, Funicello became a part of the cast in the series's debut season and was not obliged to take part in auditions. Disney's instincts were correct, and Funicello was soon the most popular Mickey Mouse Club performer. The story she wrote for her own show Adventures in Dairyland also featured her. Funicello was co-starring with Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. The film was the first of a string of movies about beach parties which became immensely famous. The scripts of all of these movies were given a personal read-through and approval by Walt Disney so as to ensure the image of Annette was protected.
