O'Neil was a student in high school when she auditioned in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. She made it into the top 100 rounds due to the fact that judges were awed with her performance. Her performance was highly applauded by the judge. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant drop in top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for top 3, and the bottom 2. The judges were shocked, and they advised that people choose Melissa O'Neil, who was the contestant with the most impressive singing abilities. O'Neil's performance was consistently good, that he did not fall into the top 3. The performance she gave on the 7th September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted that the headlines in the newspapers. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
